The mother and father of a 19-month-old toddler allegedly slapped and targeted with a racial slur by a 60-year-old man on a Delta Airlines flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta earlier this month have broken their silence, KARE-TV and WCCO-TV reported.

Jessica and Joshua Bennett of Minneapolis spoke to the stations about the story that has gained national attention. Jessica Bennett was on the Feb. 8 flight with the couple's son, Jonah, when the man, Joe Ricky Hundley, allegedly slapped the boy, which left a scratch under his eye.

(Note: The man is identified as Joe Rickey Hundley by several news sources, while others have identified him as Joe Rickey Handley, as listed on the affidavit posted on The Smoking Gun website).

Hundley claims the man was intoxicated, and also accused him of using the N-word not once, but twice, she told WCCO.

"I said, 'What did you say?’ because I couldn't believe that he would say that," she told WCCO. "He fell onto my face and his mouth was in my ear and he said it again but even more hateful. And he’s on my face, so I pushed him away."

Hundley was charged with simple assault, a misdemeanor. If convicted he faces a maximum of one year in prison.

He has also been suspended by his employer, Unitech, a division of AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group, pending an investigation, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
