Water main repair, cleanup costs still climbing in Mpls.

Crews have spent their weekend working overtime to cleanup and repair a major water main break in downtown Minneapolis that sent 14 million gallons of water gushing into the frozen streets last Thursday, the Star Tribune reports.

City officials told the newspaper they have yet to add up the repair and cleanup costs, but insurance is expected to pay some of it. The city also plans to seek reimbursement from the party responsible for the damage.

Water service should be restored to the remaining six buildings affected by the break around 10 p.m. Sunday, WCCO reports. A backup service using temporary lines is being put in place until permanent repairs are completed. However, anyone in those buildings who wants to drink or cook with the water is advised to boil it first.

A private subcontractor was working on a $70 million apartment-retail development project at Hennepin Avenue and Second Street North when the 36-inch water main was accidentally struck and ruptured around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Dozens of businesses had to close down, including Be’Wiched Deli, Black Sheep Pizza, Fogo de Chao, Haute Dish, Kindee Thai, Origami, Rosa Mexicano, Seven, Sea Change and Spoonriver. The Guthrie Theater also cancelled Thurday night’s performance of “The Servant of Two Masters.”

Water returned to normal for the vast majority of residents and businesses affected by Thursday evening.
