2 dogs rescued after breaking through thin ice

The dogs are safe and back home now.

Tell your dogs the ice isn't thick enough yet.

Two dogs broke through the thin layer of ice on East Thomas Lake Thursday morning, prompting Eagan firefighters to go out in a canoe and rescue them, a post on the City of Eagan's Facebook page says.

The dogs were starting to go underwater when the firefighters got there, but now both animals are back with their owners, the post says.

The city used this as a reminder to people that ponds and lakes aren't safe to walk on yet.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says ice should be at least 4 inches thick before you walk on it. And many lakes haven't reached that thickness yet – in fact some don't have any ice on them or have just a thin layer, according to Outdoor News' weekly report. (The median ice-in date for lakes in the Twin Cities ranges from the last week in November to the second week in December, the DNR's website says.)

Because animals can't measure the thickness of the ice, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Washington suggests keeping your pets away from lakes or ponds until the ice is safe to walk on.

The DNR's website has safety tips if you plan on going out on the ice. On average, there are more than four ice-related fatalities every winter, the DNR's website shows.

For the 2014-15 winter, five people died after falling through the ice.
