A 28-year-old Fargo woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI on two separate occasions within 8 hours of each other, the Fargo Forum reports.

Police say the woman, who has not yet been charged, was driving in the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue East in West Fargo around 3 a.m. Monday. An officer pulled her over for expired tabs and no front license plate.

After failing to pass a field sobriety test, the woman was arrested for DUI. Police learned later that the same woman was arrested around 7 p.m. the night before.

"It's pretty unusual," Sgt. Ben Schwandt at the Cass County Jail told Valley News Live. "When someone gets arrested for a DUI we keep them in our booking room until they can sober up."

However, in some cases, if offenders make bail and have a sober ride, they can leave while still intoxicated, according to the television station.

Stiffer penalties for DUI offenders in North Dakota went into effect this summer. In addition to higher fines, repeat offenders are required to enroll in the 24/7 program, which requires participants to report to jail for sobriety testing twice a day.

North Dakota Highway Patrol says more than half of fatal crashes in the state last year were alcohol-related. A regional DUI task force is cracking down on drunk driving throughout the month of October, KFGO reported.
