A suspected drunk driver in central Wisconsin killed a highway worker who was clearing a tree from the road early Sunday morning.
According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, two highway workers were sent to remove a fallen tree on County Road G near Mann Road in Hendren Township at around midnight Sunday.
At around 1:18 a.m., one of the workers called 911 to report that a vehicle had struck him and the other worker.
Deputies arrived on the scene to discover the vehicle had been traveling south on County Road G when it struck both workers and the tree. The other worker died at the scene.
Both speed and the driver’s intoxication were found to be factors in the accident, the sheriff's office said.
The surviving worker was transported to the hospital and is being treated for his injuries.
The driver has been arrested for causing injury and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and is being held at the Clark County Jail.
The incident continues to be under investigation by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Clark County Coroner, along with the State Patrol.
