Two people in their 30s were killed when their car was hit by a train Wednesday on Highway 11 in Roseau County, in far northwestern Minnesota.

KSTP reports the Ford Focus slowed but did not stop at a stop sign at a track crossing south of Warroad, Minnesota, at about 5:30 p.m. The car was struck by the train on the driver's side, and then the train pushed the vehicle into a ditch, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The victims were Aaron Cook, 35 of Warroad, and Sheryl Reed, 33, of Macon, Georgia, the state patrol says.

No details about what led to the crash were immediately available.

Last month, a crash involving another car hit by a train also resulted in two fatalities, in Kandiyohi County.

In 2013, there were 53 Minnesota highway-rail crossing collisions, resulting in six deaths, according to state statistics. An updated tally for 2014 was not immediately available.

Nationwide, according to Federal Railroad Administration statistics, 2,087 highway-rail grade crossing collisions occurred in 2013, resulting in 251 fatalities.
