Two men have been arrested in connection to a stolen vehicle and subsequent police chase in Scott County on Thursday.
The sheriff's office at 1:57 p.m. received a report of a stolen vehicle out of Carver County that was believed to be in the Cleary Lake Regional Park area in Credit River Township, a news release says.
A Scott County deputy located the vehicle in the park with the help of the stolen vehicle's OnStar tracking service.
Law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled and was pursued "for several miles" before it crashed into a ditch near 190th Street East and Fairlawn Avenue in Spring Lake Township, the release notes.
The two men in the vehicle fled on foot. Deputies arrested the passenger – a 21-year-old man from Minneapolis – near the crash site.
About an hour later, the driver – a 20-year-old from St. Paul – was found in a wooded area on the south side of 195th Street East, east of Vergus Avenue. He resisted being taken into custody and was bitten by the Sheriff's Office K-9 prior to being arrested.
Both suspects were taken to the Scott County Jail.
Inside the vehicle, deputies found a gun and other property believed to be connected to other thefts in the area.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in stolen vehicles being used to commit thefts in our local communities and we will continue to investigate these crimes vigorously,” Sheriff Luke Hennen said in a statement. “As move into winter, please remember to lock your vehicles and never leave them running and unattended.”
The Elko New Market Police Department, Mdewakanton Public Safety, Prior Lake Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol assisted the Scott County Sheriff's Office in the incident.
