2 men charged in connection to fatal shooting at Bloomington apartment complex
Two people have been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in an apartment in Bloomington on Nov. 30.
Shakur Freed Muhammed of Hopkins died at 5:39 a.m. on Monday of multiple gunshot wounds in the Hampshire Hill Apartment complex off Old Shakopee Road West in Bloomington, a Hennepin County Medical Examiner report says.
According to the Bloomington Police Department, the victim had been with Mohamed Amid Bayle Idd, 26, of Eden Prairie, and Abdi Bishar Mohamed, 27, of Minneapolis, earlier in the night, but at some point, a confrontation took place in the apartment Idd had leased previously, leading to the shooting.
Muhammed was fatally shot and Idd was treated for gunshot wounds to his upper body, police said.
Idd has since been charged with second-degree murder and possession of ammo/firearm, while Mohamed is charged with aiding an offender after the fact and one count of possession of ammo/firearm. Both Idd and Mohamed have previous felony convictions that prohibit them from possessing a firearm.
They are both in custody at the Hennepin County Jail, police said.
The charges
According to the criminal complaints, Bloomington police responded to the apartment complex around 5:40 p.m. on a report of gunshots. Those who called police said after shots were fired, two men were spotted running away from the 6800 building toward the 10680 building at the Hampshire Hill Apartment complex, which has multiple buildings.
Police found the men, identified as Idd and Mohamed, in the vestibule of the 10680 building, charges state. Police noted they both had blood on their clothes.
Idd told police he was shot in the stomach, while police noticed Mohamed had "significant lacerations" on his arms, the complaint says.
Idd told officers he was in his apartment in the 6800 building when a man came through the balcony and started shooting him with two guns, the complaint says. Idd said the only people in his apartment before then was himself and his cousin, Mohamed.
Mohamed's story differed from his cousin's. He told police he was in the apartment with his cousin and two other men when he heard someone shooting at Idd, charges state. He said the person shooting was not one of the men who were in the apartment. He then said he jumped out of the window and ran.
Because Idd and Mohamed's stories did not match, police entered the apartment with a robot equipped with a camera, which located a man on the floor of a bedroom and a "large amount of blood." the complaint says. Officers went into the apartment and confirmed the man, later identified as Muhammed, was dead.
Police detained Idd and Mohamed. Meanwhile, police found a gun in the trash near the 10680 building – surveillance video shows Idd hand the gun to Mohamed, who put the gun in the trash, court documents state. Police also found another gun under a tree between the 16080 building and the 6800 building.
Witnesses who live in the apartment complex told police they heard gunshots around 5:40 p.m. and then heard the sound of broken glass and then more gunshots, charges say. They then saw two men, which surveillance video showed as being Idd and Mohamed, exit through the porch of the apartment in the 6800 building and travel on foot toward the 10680 building.
A witness who lives in the 10680 building with a view of the apartment in the 6800 building said she saw two men standing outside the apartment and heard one of the men say, "I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you." She then heard gunshots and saw one of the men run. She heard the other man say, "I forgot something," and then saw him go into the apartment. The man then left the apartment and they ran toward the 10680 building, which they tried to enter but were apprehended by police.
Police spoke to Muhammed's friends and family, learning about 5-6 hours prior to the shooting the victim was with his girlfriend and they got into an argument. He then contacted his friend, Idd, to pick him up, which he did. Muhammed went to Idd's car, but he returned to his girlfriend's house telling her he stole 300 Percocet pills from Idd. He then left with Idd shortly thereafter.
Muhammed also told a friend Idd was getting picked up from his girlfriend's house and they were going back to his apartment in the 6800 building.
