Two employees of the Minnesota Department of Transportation were injured -- one seriously--when their vehicle was struck by a car in a work zone on Interstate 35W in Burnsville Sunday afternoon.

The two workers were placing traffic cones along a stretch of the highway in preparation for it to be closed overnight when the driver swerved and struck the Ford truck they were riding in, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on I-35W at Cliff Road in Dakota County, according to the State Patrol.

One of the employees, Ronald McDeid, 43, of Champlin, suffered serious injuries in the crash. His condition was not known Sunday night. Dennis Scott, 57, of Rockford, had injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. Both were taken to area hospitals, according to the Pioneer Press.

The driver who hit the MnDOT truck, a 25-year-old man from Mound, wasn’t injured, WCCO reports.

"Drivers need to be careful in work zones," said Kevin Gutknecht, communications director for MnDOT, according to the Pioneer Press.

MnDOT crews were reducing the northbound traffic on I-35W from three lanes to one between Burnsville Parkway and Black Dog Road overnight, so crews can begin building a dike to keep floodwaters off the highway. Crews planned to complete the work overnight and reopen all lanes before Monday morning's commute.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
