In less than 24 hours, there have been two homicides in St. Paul this weekend.

Both cases were shootings. The first happened early Saturday morning at the intersection of Lafond Avenue and Dale Street North, according to a news release from the St. Paul Police Department.

Police had received a call around 5 a.m. about a fight in the area, the release says. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound lying in the street. Medics brought the victim to Regions Hospital, where he later died.

Police say several possible witnesses were interviewed, but no arrests have been made.

The second shooting happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, police said in a Facebook post. Officers working off-duty at an establishment on the 900 block of University Avenue reported hearing shots fired.

Shortly after that, a man suffering from a gunshot wound was dropped off at Regions Hospital, where he later died, the post says.

Again, several possible witnesses were interviewed, but no arrests have been made.

Once the Ramsey County medical examiner has positively identified the victims and their families have been notified, their identities – along with any updates on the cases – will be released by the police department's Twitter account.

The shootings mark the 18th and 19th homicides in the city this year, the department says. Police do not believe the cases are connected.

"This has to stop," a man who says he lives near the area of the Saturday shooting wrote on the department's Facebook post. "I don't feel safe in this neighborhood or home anymore."

Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to call the homicide unit at 651-266-5650.
