2 people found dead at Faribault's chamber of commerce building

This is the latest recent tragedy in the city of 23,000

Two people were found dead in what police are calling a likely murder-suicide in Faribault.

The bodies of an adult male and adult female were found behind a desk at the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce Friday afternoon, after a citizen said he saw people on the ground, police said.

Officers found a gun at the scene, and said nobody else that works with the chamber was there at the time, or injured.

They're investigating, but right now say it appears to be a murder-suicide and the public isn't at risk. Police did not give the identities of the man and woman, as they're notifying family.

This is the latest recent tragedy in the city of 23,000. Earlier this month a man and child were found dead inside a home, which police also said appeared to be a murder-suicide. And at the end of November, a Faribault woman who was recently reunited with her birth mother after 39 years apart was killed in a car crash.

The prevalence of murder-suicides

There are an average of 11 murder-suicides reported in America every week, the Violence Policy Center says. That amounts to more than 1,200 people dying from murder-suicide every year in the U.S.

In addition, the group says a gun is involved nine out of every 10 times.

And they note in nearly 75 percent of the cases, an intimate partner of the shooter is one of the victims.

The shooters are most often men, and the victims most often women.

There is no national database to track murder-suicides, but the Violence Policy Center release its American Roulette studies in an attempt to measure the impact of such incidents.
