Man found dead, woman and a dog rescued after building collapse in Sioux Falls

Crews have found the body of a trapped construction worker.

A day-long search for a missing construction worker ended when his body was found in the rubble of a collapsed building in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Friday evening.

A woman and a dog were pulled alive from the remains of the building after the collapse.

Authorities say the missing man had been making pounding noises but they stopped before an emergency crew could reach him.

A special search dog had to be brought in to help find him.

Currently, there is no information on how the man died.

Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras had been tweeting that crews were worried about dropping temperatures. Shifting debris had also been a concern.

Crews initially said they were searching for two trapped victims. The first person and a dog were freed several hours earlier.

The Sioux Falls Fire Department has been tweeting about the collapse that happened on Phillips Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Friday, noting it's a construction-related incident and they have to work carefully and methodically to remove debris because the structure is unstable.

Officials told the Argus Leader a construction worker and a 22-year-old woman were buried in the rubble. At around 1:10 p.m. Friday, crews rescued the woman's dog from the debris, and about 20 minutes later they pulled her from the rubble, Fire Chief Jim Sideras tweeted.

Crews had to remove the debris around her by hand to prevent any injury or make conditions worse. Sideras tweeted that she said "hi" to her parents before being taken to the hospital.

According to the Argus Leader, the woman suffered some leg injuries but is "in good condition."

There's no word on the condition or location of the second victim. The construction worker had been making pounding noises, but those noises have stopped.

The collapse happened at the former Copper Lounge, which closed in September, KDLT says. Reports indicate the building was undergoing a remodel, Jonathan Ellis, a reporter for the Argus Leader, tweeted.

Because the area around the collapse is so unstable, the streets nearby are closed, and the fire department says the area could remain closed through the weekend, possibly longer.
