Two logging trucks have crashed in the last few days, one ending in the death of a pickup driver whose vehicle collided with a timber-hauling semi.

On Friday in southeast Minnesota, a logging truck veered out of control and tipped over near Fountain City, sparking a fire in a crash that closed state Highway 35 and left the roadway full of timber, the Winona Daily News reported.

Driver Edward Appel, 57, of Taylor, Wis., missed a curve, drove onto the shoulder and hit a guard and bridge rail, the newspaper reported. He lost control, the truck overturned, the logs spilled and his engine compartment caught fire, the Daily News reported.

Appel was briefly trapped in the rig, but a passing semi driver put out the flames and helped Appel out.

On Thursday in northeast Minnesota, an 85-year-old Two Harbors man died when his pickup truck collided with a logging truck northwest of Two Harbors, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

The circumstances of that crash remained under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Minnesota State Patrol, the newspaper reported.
