2 shootings in St. Paul leave 1 dead; trains idled during rush hour

6 people have been shot to death in St. Paul so far this month.

St. Paul police are investigating two shootings that happened within a few blocks of each other Monday afternoon. One left a man dead, while the other shut down a light rail station during rush hour.

The Police Department said in a statement that a man with gunshot wounds was found near the intersection of St. Albans and Fuller Avenues at about 2:30 p.m. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Homicide and forensic investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting, police say.

A couple of hours later shots were reportedly fired at the Dale Street station of Metro Transit's Green Line. An MPR News reporter who was riding the train at about 4:40 p.m. said she heard what appeared to be two series of gunshots.

Metro Transit announced a little before 7 p.m. that they had resumed service.

A spokesman for Metro Transit, which is also investigating the light rail shooting, told the Pioneer Press a 38-year-old man is being treated at Regions Hospital, adding that the man is conscious.

The newspaper reports police believe Monday's two shootings are not related to each other, nor to a fatal shooting near the State Capitol that happened on Saturday, but they are investigating that possibility.

A person arrested after Saturday's shooting death at a home near Aurora and Marion Avenues is suspected of aiding and abetting murder, KARE 11 says. Police announced no arrests in either of Monday's shootings.

9 homicides in St. Paul so far this year

Six of the nine fatal shootings in St. Paul during 2017 have happened during April. Besides the two that occurred in the last three days, four people were killed in what police say was a murder-suicide on the city's east side on April 7.

In that incident, investigators say a 20-year-old man killed the mother of his child as well as her sister and father before taking his own life.

Another of the city's homicides involved a Chicago-area man shot by two St. Paul police officers last month. Those officers, who were responding to a domestic violence call, told state investigators Cordale Handy had refused to drop the gun he was pointing at them.

Handy's mother says that claim is false and she is now suing the city, the police department, and the officers involved.
