More than a dozen firefighters are trying to contain two fires burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Tuesday.

Northland's NewsCenter reports a fire north of the South Arm of Knife Lake and south of Amoeber Lake spans about 15 to 20 acres, creating 3-foot flames in a mix of balsam, Jack pine, and blowdown, MPR reported.

Forest officials have closed campsites and portages on the South Arm of Knife Lake, but all BWCA entry points remain open.

A fire occupying a single tree burns near Sedative Lake, Northland's NewsCenter said, which is a few miles southwest of the larger fire.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, there's a moderate to high fire risk in the BWCA Tuesday.

The Forest Service is laying the groundwork for a prescribed burn on nearly 1,500 acres near Ely to prevent catastrophic wildfires from occurring.
