2 squad cars, 2 parked cars damaged during overnight chase

A stolen car prompted a short chase through the Twin Cities metro – and ended after multiple cars, including two State Patrol squads, had been hit.

A state trooper ran a license plate around 2:30 a.m., on a vehicle going eastbound on I-94 in Minneapolis, State Patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson told BringMeTheNews. The plate came up as reported stolen out of Fridley.

The stolen vehicle, a 2006 Chevy Malibu, exited off I-394 and Penn Avenue in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, and the troopers turned on their sirens and began pursuit, according to Nielson.

The stolen car accelerated and fled, then hit a stop sign on Penn Avenue and Cedar Lake Road before continuing on, Nielson said.

The State Patrol report says one squad car then performed a "pursuit intervention technique" – that's when the trooper uses the front fender of the squad car to make contact with the suspect's car, the intention being to spin it out and end the chase.

That caused the stolen Malibu to lose control, and it hit the second State Patrol squad car.

The Malibu then struck two additional cars – both parked, both unoccupied – and drove off again, before crashing a short time later.

The total: Moderate damage to one squad car, minor damage to the other, and minor damage to the two parked cars.

Neither of the state troopers involved were injured, nor were the two suspects.

The pursuit went for 0.3 miles, and lasted less than a minute, Nielson said.

The State Patrol says two people were in the stolen Malibu. The driver, a 24-year-old from Minneapolis, was arrested; the passenger, an Apple Valley 23-year-old, fled but was quickly taken into custody.

Both were arrested and booked into Hennepin County Jail, but have not been charged yet.
