The suspect who opened fire outside a high school prom in Wisconsin Saturday night has died after being shot by police.

The Antigo Police Department says the 18-year-old suspect, who was later identified as Jakob Wagner, showed up with a rifle outside Antigo High School around 11 p.m. and started shooting, hitting two students as they left the building.

Police officers were in the parking lot patrolling prom activities when they heard the gunshots, and an officer "immediately" shot at the suspect, "stopping the threat," the release says.

Wagner died shortly after 1 a.m., police said late Sunday morning.

The two victims – a male and a female, whose identities haven't been released – were brought to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the release says, with WSAW reporting they were both shot in the leg.

The female victim has been released from the hospital, while the male is undergoing surgery, the release notes.

Wagner graduated from Antigo High School last year, WSAW reports. Officials say the shooting did appear to be random, calling him a lone gunman, the release says. Police are executing a search warrant at the suspect's home to see if they can find any additional information about the shooting.

No other injuries were reported, with police noting others who were at the prom were escorted from the school safely following the shooting.

The high school plans to have counseling services available Monday for students and teachers who need to talk to someone about the shooting, according to a post on the school's Facebook page.

The police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The shooting is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is required by state law.
Antigo, which has a population of more than 8,000 people, is located in Langlade County, Wisconsin, about 220 miles from the Twin Cities and roughly 85 miles northwest of Green Bay.
