Two teenagers are charged in connection with an assault on a 15-year-old girl that was recorded and posted to Facebook.

Cassandra Borden, 18, was charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree assault and fourth-degree damage to property, while 19-year-old Alexis Nelson was charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree assault in connection to the beating.

Video of the June 17 assault was posted to Facebook by the victim's mother, Jennifer DeTenancour. As of Monday afternoon, it has been viewed more than 500,000 times and shared more than 8,000 times.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim was hanging out with a group of people when some of them decided to go for a walk.

When they got to a wooded area in St. Francis, Borden began to punch and hit the teen several times because she "snitched on" someone.

Video given to investigators shows Borden hitting and kicking the girl 49 times, pulling off her purse then throwing it, causing her cellphone to break.

The video also shows Nelson cutting a large section of the girl's hair while she's being assaulted.

Borden admitted to police she punched, hit and kicked the victim at least 20 times, and Nelson admitted she cut the victim's hair.

When police responded to the assault report, they noticed the victim had bruising, red marks and scratches all over her body and face, and a large section of her hair had been cut off.

If convicted of the fifth-degree assault charge, each suspect could face up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000, the charges say.

The Star Tribune says the beating has inspired an anti-bullying campaign organized by Sydney DeTenancour's family and friends. There's a "Syd's Angels" motorcycle ride planned for next month to raise awareness about bullying.
