A 2-year-old boy was fatally shot inside an apartment in St. Paul Wednesday afternoon.
St. Paul Fire medics arrived at a third-floor apartment located on the 800 block of Rice Street after a 911 caller reported at 1:12 p.m. that a boy had "hurt his head." The medics arrived to what the police department described as a "heartbreaking scene" to find the child suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The boy was treated by medics but died in an ambulance outside the building approximately eight minutes after the initial call for help.
Three kids of unidentified ages were taken to the police department for questioning, but police have yet to discover who was holding the gun when the fatal shot was fired. St. Paul PD notes that "it is also possible there were other people in the apartment when the child was injured."
An autopsy conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will help determine if the shooting was accidental, intentional or self-inflicted.
The investigation is active and no further information has been released.
