A 2-year-old boy died and three other people were hospitalized from injuries suffered in a house fire near Detroit Lakes on Sunday.
According to the Becker County Sheriff's Office, the fire on the 23000 block fo Duffney Road – 9 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes – was reported at about 12:35 a.m. When deputies arrived, the house was fully engulfed in fire and two people were trapped inside.
Investigators have preliminarily determined that children in the basement heard smoke alarms and alerted family members after they saw flames on the main floor of the home. A stairway to the upstairs bedrooms was blocked by flames, forcing the parents to escape from a second-floor window.
Once out of the house, the family realized a 2-year-old boy was unaccounted for, so the father and and an older brother went back into the home but were unable to find him.
The 2-year-old was later found dead.
Three others were airlifted to hospitals, including a man who was taken to a Fargo hospital for smoke inhalation, and a woman and a 5-year-old girl who were transported to a Minneapolis hospital for smoke inhalation and burns.
The parents are identified in a GoFundMe as Mike and Melissa Hedlund, who have seven children, including three adult children, living with them. The online fundraiser says the three family members airlifted to hospitals are all in stable condition.
