A 30-year-old Duluth woman has been hospitalized after being found unconscious in an alley in subzero temperatures.

Northland's Newscenter reports Erin Coons was discovered over the weekend near St. Mary's Hospital by a passerby. Coons was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and is being treated for severe frostbite.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that emergency responders estimated she had been in the cold for a few hours.

According to Northland's Newscenter report, she was put into a medically induced coma with breathing and feeding tubes. Those tubes were removed Wednesday morning, and doctors were waiting for her to wake.

FOX 21 in Duluth reported that Coons' family said there was no blood flow to the tips of her left toes, which may have to be amputated.

Coons is the second woman in Duluth to be found alive but unresponsive outside suffering from severe frostbite in about a month.

Alyssa Lommel, 19, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota Duluth, was discovered on the morning of Dec. 7 after spending nearly nine hours outside in temperatures as cold as 17 below zero.

The St. Cloud Times reports Lommel recently had surgery at Region's Hospital.

On her CaringBridge website, Lommel's mother Teri wrote, "She ended up basically only losing the tips of her toes on one foot, so she has little nubs yet, which will help greatly for balance and walking, but the other foot they had to take just below the ball of her foot. She should still be able to walk just fine with inserts in her shoes."

The St. Cloud Times says Lommel was recently moved out of intensive care at Region's Hospital because of an influx of patients suffering from frostbite.

Also on Tuesday, 32-year-old Andrea Marker, of Lakeville, was found dead on her doorstep by her sister. The family said they believe she likely froze to death.
