2nd medical marijuana supplier starts offering discounts, loyalty program

A second Minnesota manufacturer of medical marijuana is cutting prices on its products.

Minnesota Medical Solutions announced it is offering a 50 percent discount to some patients on their first visit in October.

There's also a loyalty program for its 300-plus existing patients, according to a news release. Points can be earned with each purchase, and redeemed to pay for some of the medicine's cost in the future.

“We want suffering patients to find out if this treatment can give them relief, and this program will make the initial treatment significantly more affordable," said the company's CEO Kyle Kingsley in the news release.

The Minnesota Medical Solutions discount follows an announcement two days ago that the state's other manufacturer, Leafline Labs, had cut prices on a one-month's supply by 15 percent.

KSTP says the discounts raise questions "about the viability of Minnesota's medical marijuana program."

The station's story asks whether people who have prescriptions for the products can afford them. Health insurance does not pay for or reimburse patients who use the products.

Through Sept. 17, 491 Minnesotans had been approved in the state registry to get medical pot, according to statistics from the Minnesota Department of Health.

Dr. Kyle Kingsley, CEO of Minnesota Medical Solutions, told MPR News his company has about 300 customers, with hundreds more in the pipeline having started the registration process.

Kingsley told City Pages the number of patients served is in line with projections, and added that the cost could shrink as more patients enroll in the program.

Minnesota’s medical cannabis program began July 1. It's available to patients suffering from one of nine serious conditions, including cancer, terminal illnesses and seizure disorders – though officials are considering whether to add "intractable pain" to the list.
