Four pets died after a fire broke out at a house just outside of Shakopee this week.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office says the fire happened around 8:47 p.m. Monday at a home in the 700 block of Fern Lane in Jackson Township.

Firefighters arrived to find the single family home ablaze, and though they managed to contain the fire, it had already caused "extensive damage" to the house.

Nobody was home at the time, but the owners' three dogs and a cat were inside, and they were all killed as a result.

Investigators believe a gas stove may have been the cause of the fire, with foul play not suspected.

"Our thoughts are with the family as they recover from the damage to their home and the loss of their beloved pets,” said Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen.
