3 ISIL suspects who didn't cooperate get 10-15 years in prison

All three defendants sentenced Tuesday were given prison sentences of 10 or 15 years.

None of the three Minnesota men sentenced Tuesday for acting to join the Islamic State cooperated with the U.S. government.

And they'll all spend at least a decade in prison as a result.

Hamza Ahmed, Adnan Farah and Hanad Musse were each sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to conspiring “to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization” (as it’s referred to in legal terms), the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

According to their guilty pleas, Ahmed and Musse bought tickets to fly overseas, with the goal of then joining the Islamic State. Farah meanwhile paid money and brought photos to try to get a fake passport, so he could travel overseas and do the same.

Longer sentences for not cooperating

Ahmed, 21 years old, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Farah (20 years old) and Musse (21) were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Compare that to the three men sentenced Monday, who were charged with similar crimes and also pleaded guilty.

There's 21-year-old Zacharia Abdurahman, who did not cooperate either. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, in line with Ahmed, Farah and Musse.

Abdirizak Warsame meanwhile was sentenced to 30 months in prison, and testified against three other co-defendants in the case.

And Abdullahi Yusu will spend no more time in prison, getting a sentence of time served plus 20 years probation. Like Warsame, he also testified against three others. Yusuf has also been working on a de-radicalization rehabilitation program.

"[Tuesday's] sentences reflect the seriousness of these defendant's crimes," said Andrew Luger, U.S. Attorney for Minnesota. "Although all three defendants pleaded guilty before trial, none were willing to cooperate with the United States. ISIL continues to target Minnesota's Somali community. Only by working together will we succeed in ending this threat."

The others who were charged

The six defendants mentioned above were among the 10 Minnesota men charged in 2015 with trying to help or join the Islamic State militant group. An 11th was charged in August of 2016.

All six who were sentenced Monday and Tuesday pleaded guilty.

An additional three went to trial and were convicted – they're expected to be sentenced this week as well.

As for the 10th and 11th suspects: It’s believed they fled to Syria before being charged.
