3 men arrested after BASE jumping off cellphone tower

You're not supposed to do that.

Three men were arrested in Wyoming Sunday night after jumping off a tower.

The Wyoming Police Department says the men were caught climbing the AT&T communication tower, and when police ordered them to come down they refused.

Instead, they climbed to the top of the tower and BASE jumped off.

They were all three arrested and booked into jail. They could face charges including trespassing, disorderly conduct, and obstructing the legal process.

The police department called the stunt "highly illegal and dangerous," and said the suspects' names will be sent to the Department of Homeland Security for trespassing on a public utility site.

How dangerous is BASE jumping?

BASE jumping is a sport where people jump of objects, including buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and the Earth itself (that's where BASE comes from in the sport's name). And it's often called the "world's most dangerous sport."

However, there aren't any official reports on how many people get hurt or die from doing it. This unofficial list found since 1981, 320 people around the world have died while BASE jumping, with the most deadly year being 2016 when 37 people died.

A 2007 Norwegian study found people who BASE jump have a five- to eightfold increased risk of injury or death compared to skydiving. The study reviewed 20,850 BASE jumps from 1995 to 2005 at the Kjerag massif in Norway, finding there were nine deaths and 82 nonfatal accidents.
