3 Minnesota companies land in top 40 of annual retail sales rankings

Scroll down a new list of the 100 highest-grossing companies in the U.S. last year, and it won't take long to find three of Minnesota's most prominent businesses.

The National Retail Federation released its annual ranking of the United States' top businesses based on the previous year's sales numbers.

Minnesota appears three times on the list, and all are in the top 40: Target (No. 6), Best Buy (No. 11), and SUPERVALU (No. 38).

The figures are determined using "a variety of estimation techniques," the retail federation says, based on publicly disclosed information. Because of that, the rankings' figures may not match official public filing reports.

Here's a look at the Minnesota companies that made the list.

Target came in at No. 6, with retail sales reaching an estimated $72,618,000,000 – a 1.9 percent increase in U.S. figures compared to 2013 (worldwide however, sales fell 0.2 percent). Target was No. 3 overall on the 2014 list.

The Minneapolis-based retailer has spent the past 18 months cutting jobs, shaking up the personnel in its top offices, and streamlining its business as it rebounds from the 2013 holiday data breach and the expensive closure of its Canada operation.

Best Buy, based in Richfield, ranked 11th, with retail sales topping out at $35,957,000,000, a 0.1 percent growth in the U.S. It moved up one spot on the list, from No. 12 last year.

Like Target, the company is dealing with a recent departure from Canada. Best Buy cut 1,500 jobs in the country in March as it ended the Future Shop brand. Half the stores were closed, and the other half were renamed under the Best Buy moniker.

SUPERVALU fell from 37 last year to 38 on this year's list. The Eden Prairie-based grocer had sales of $11,499,000,000 in 2014, a jump of 4.9 percent compared to the year prior. All its sales came in the United States.

Last summer and fall, SUPERVALU was hit twice with data breaches.

Here are the top five companies in terms of retail sales for 2014 (click here for the full list):

  1. Wal-Mart: $343,624,000
  2. The Kroger Co.: $103,033,000
  3. Costco: $79,694,000
  4. The Home Depot: $74,203,000
  5. Walgreen's: $72,671,000
