3 months after a grandmother was killed in crossfire, the reward is now $10K

59-year-old Birdell Beeks was sitting in a parked minivan with her granddaughter when she was struck by the gunfire that proved to be fatal.

Minneapolis police said immediately that Beeks was not the intended target of those shots. They swarmed to the north side neighborhood around 21st and Penn Avenues in the days that followed the May 26 shooting.

Nearly three months later, police said Monday "Despite people being strongly encouraged to speak with officers, this case remains unsolved."

Now investigators and Beeks' family hope a $10,000 reward will help shake loose information about who fired the shots.

The reward money is available to "anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for this murder," police say.

The reward is being offered with CrimeStoppers of Minnesota, whose website offers a way to submit tips anonymously. Tips can also be submitted by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Or you can text one to 274637 (CRIMES) and then text Tip674.

At the time of the shooting, Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau wrote in a statement: “One of my greatest concerns has been realized: people with no regard for the lives of those in our community taking the life of an innocent bystander.”

Beeks' daughter, Bunny Beeks, told KSTP Monday "We're asking anyone to come forward, even if it's the intended target, just come forward and do the right thing."
