3 teens in car hit by train in Isanti County
Three teenagers were in a car that was hit by a train in Isanti County Sunday night.
According to the sheriff's office, the crash happened at 7:03 p.m. on 299th Avenue Northeast and Jackson Street Northeast.
The car, a Chevy Impala, had been traveling westbound on 299th Avenue when the male driver stopped at a stop sign for the tracks and then he proceeded across, which is when the train hit the rear of the vehicle.
A 16-year-old in the back seat was brought to the hospital with minor injuries. Two 17-year-olds who were also in the vehicle were released to their parents.
Nationwide, there were 2,216 vehicle-train collisions in 2019, including 293 fatalities and 807 injuries, Operation Lifesaver says.
In Minnesota, there were 46 highway-rail incidents in 2019 and 36 in 2020, the latest report from the Federal Railroad Administration shows.
