A 3-year-old boy was killed in a crash that caused the vehicle he was in to split in half in Cloquet on Sunday. A 5-year-old girl was also injured, and the driver has been arrested.
According to the Cloquet Police Department, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of the 1500 block of White Pine Trail.
At the scene, officers found a 2004 Chevy Impala on each side of the road, which suggests the vehicle left the road and hit a tree, which split the vehicle in half.
The 3-year-old boy was dead at the scene, while a 5-year-old girl was transported to the hospital. Her condition is not known.
The children appear to have been in child safety seats at the time of the crash, police note.
The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Onamia, Minnesota, was transported to the hospital and later released. She has since been arrested and booked into Carlton County Jail.
Formal charges are pending by the Carlton County Attorney's Office. Police say early indications show speed and impairment are potential factors in the crash.
The driver and the two children have not yet been identified.
