34-year-old St. Cloud paramedic dies in the line of duty

She suffered a stroke while on duty.

A paramedic with Gold Cross Ambulance in the St. Cloud area died in the line of duty on Sunday, Nov. 25. 

Minnesota EMS Honor Guard announced on Facebook that 34-year-old Nicole Van Heel died from complications of a stroke. She suffered the stroke while on duty Sunday and was rushed to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment but did not survive. 

Van Heel is a St. Cloud native and graduate of St. Cloud Apollo High School and St. Cloud Technical and Community College, according to her obituary.

She had been a paramedic with Gold Cross Ambulance in St. Cloud since 2007. 

Previously, she served as a firefighter with the St. Augusta and St. Joseph Fire Departments, respectively.

On Tuesday, more than a dozen emergency vehicles including an entire fleet of Gold Cross Ambulances guided Van Heel's procession to a funeral home in St. Cloud. 

Her funeral will be held on Friday.
