3M promises to enhance TV screens

3M and a California-based nanotechnology company will work together to sell a new film that allows LCD displays to deliver richer, truer-to-life color. The Maplewood-based company will provide optical film, as well as engineering and design help. 3M says the film could be used inside TVs, laptops and desktop computers, tablet computers and smartphones.

Former 3M CEO Allen Jacobson dies at 86

Allen Jacobson, a former CEO of the 3M Co. from 1986 to 1991 has died at 86. Jacobson, who championed research and development at 3M, started with the Maplewood-based manufacturing company after graduating from college in 1947.

3M expands solar-film plant

3M is expanding its sustainable energy footprint with its new photovoltaic film manufacturing plant in Missouri. The Maplewood-based conglomerate says the film cuts manufacturing time and replaces the need for the heavy glass used in rooftop solar modules. The Star Tribune also reports the project will lower costs for U.S.-based makers of solar panels.

PepsiCo hires 3M's chief design officer

After 10 years at Maplewood-based 3M, Mauro Porcini will now focus on expanding Pepsi's 12 biggest brands, Fast Company reports. At 3M, Porcini had a role in designing office supplies, health care products and built a sought-after design team. Porcini joins PepsiCo on July 2.

3M settles lawsuit over Cogent purchase

Both 3M and Cogent deny any wrong doing, but have agreed to pay $1.9 million to shareholders and their attorneys. Bloomberg reports the investors claim Cogent CEO Ming Hsieh favored 3M to collect a retention bonus. The Maplewood-based company paid about $943 million in 2010 for Cogent.

3M hopes to brighten innovation with high-end lighting

3M's Architectural Markets division is adding a little flair to its lighting products. Over the summer, the Maplewood based manufacturer rolled out Its AIR and FLEX lights which feature sleek curves and new patterns that 3M expects to be a hit among high-end architects and designers. The company is hoping the aesthetically-pleasing new lights will also help enhance the division's reputation as an innovator.

3M to invest $50 million in China

A 3M executive says the $50 million investment is part of a "five-year strategy for China to increase annual sales 15 to 20 percent." The Maplewood-based manufacturer plans to develop new technology and products for the China market -- 3M's biggest overseas market.

3M, Cargill, General Mills among companies to share energy secrets

Several companies gathered to swap power-saving tips at 3M's energy-efficiency summit on Monday. The Maplewood-based company touted its plan to change light bulbs across 35 million square feet of factory space, the Star Tribune reports.
