Three cows and a calf have been euthanized after they were among 56 found neglected on a farm in southeast Minnesota.

KTTC reports that the Animal Humane Society and the Winona County Sheriff's Department took the cows into care on Sept. 4 after they were found "grossly malnourished and neglected."

It follows a visit from deputies to a farm near Utica Township, where the cows, yearlings, calves and a bull were being kept in "inhumane conditions."

The Winona Daily News reported an update on Monday, with the sheriff's office saying four of the cattle, one of them a calf, had to be euthanized because of their condition.

There is better news for the remainder, with authorities saying they are improving.

"The cattle are grazing, resting comfortably, and all of them can get up on their own," Sheriff Ron Ganrude told the newspaper.

The La Crosse Tribune reports the cattle will remain in the custody of the county until a hearing decides their future, with an investigation into their neglect continuing.

Possible criminal charges against the owner could follow.
