A family of four all died in a crash in southern Minnesota Thursday.
According to police, the single-vehicle crash happened around 6 p.m. on the south side of Austin, with responders from the city's police and fire departments arriving at the scene on 2nd Drive SW to find the bodies of a man, woman and two children in a burning car.
Both children were under the age of 5, police said.
Results of a preliminary investigation show the vehicle was traveling east on 11th Ave. SW when it left the roadway, went through trees and down an embankment before coming to a rest on 2nd Drive SW.
"This is an incredibly tragic event and our Department extends its condolences to the affected families and friends of the deceased," Austin Police Chief David McKichan said in a statement.
Identities of the victims will be released at a later date.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
