4 MN companies named among the best for military veterans

The list looks at how companies support veterans and military reserve members.

Four Minnesota companies are being recognized as some of the best in the U.S. for military veterans.

The Military Times released its annual list Wednesday of the 82 best employers. The companies were chosen based on a "detailed and rigorous, more-than-90-question survey." The survey looked at things like recruitment of veterans and service members, company culture, policies, and accommodations for military reserve members.

Below are the Minnesota companies that made the list.

U.S. Bank

Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank comes in at number 11 on the list.

The bank has 70,756 employees – 2.7 percent of which are or were in the military. It's also been given a perfect four-star rating for company training about military and military spouse policies. It has three stars for how well it helps veterans acclimate.

U.S. Bank prides itself in serving and hiring veterans – particularly with flexible scheduling and helping veterans transition into a new role. You can read more about the bank's military support here.

Xcel Energy

In the 19th spot is the Twin Cities-based energy company.

According to the data, nearly 10 percent of its 11,299 employees have a military background – as do 14 percent of its new hires.

The Military Times notes Xcel uses half of its recruiting budget on veterans.

The company says it's been named a top 100 military-friendly employer for the past eight years. You can read more about that here.

Hormel Foods

The Austin-based foods producer comes in at number 74.

The report says a whopping 44 percent of Hormel's 10,588 employees have a military background. It also uses 20 percent of its recruiting money on veterans.

Hormel's been given a full four-star rating for helping veterans acclimate, but just a half-star for company training about military.

"We are honored to be recognized as a top employer for veterans for the fifth year in a row,” said Janet Hogan, senior vice president of human resources at Hormel Foods, in a statement. “We are proud of our employees who serve or have served our country.”

Ecolab

And in the 81st spot is St. Paul-based Ecolab.

There's no data for what percentage of employees are veterans, but it has a three-star rating for how it helps veterans acclimate to new work.
