A recent study highlighted by opponents of legalizing same-sex marriage in Minnesota shows 43 percent of the state supports the measure.

MPR reports the study from Williams Institute of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy at UCLA School of Law examines public support for marriage by state.

Minnesota's support is lower than most of its border states: 45 percent support gay marriage in Iowa and South Dakota, 47 percent in Wisconsin. North Dakota is just a bit lower than Minnesota with 40 percent in support.

Only 12 states and the District of Columbia had support for same-sex marriage at or above 50%.

"This is another concrete example that Minnesotans don't support gay marriage," Minnesota for Marriage spokeswoman Autumn Leva said in a news release.

Minnesota for Marriage will travel around the state this weekend and next to rally rural Minnesotans against the proposal, MinnPost reports.

Nine states currently allow gay marriage.
