A group of non-union workers who clean big-box stores across the Twin Cities metro protested outside of the Target store on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday, WCCO reports.

The janitors are employed by Diversified Cleaning Services, Carlson Cleaning Company and Eurest Cleaning, according to KARE 11. They walked off the job Monday night for what they consider unfair labor practices.

"Target contracts with regional vendors to provide housekeeping services for all our stores and, as such, we do not employ the individuals involved in today's events," Target said in a statement Tuesday morning. "At Target, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical business practices and we expect our vendors to do the same."

According to the Centers for Workers United in Struggle, the group that helped organize the one-day strike, the workers are demanding better wages and the right to form a union without fear of retaliation.

Fox 9 says the employees are expected to return to work on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for Diversified Maintenance told MPR, "We have had very few call-outs this morning; we had three call-outs that we believe are related to the strike. And all stores are being cleaned as usual."

Last week, the workers threatened a strike if representatives from their employers did not meet with them for negotiations by noon Sunday.

Meanwhile, unionized janitors in the Twin Cities reached a tentative labor agreement this past weekend.
