5 motorcyclists killed on Minnesota roads in under a week

After five riders were killed in motorcycle accidents in less than a week in Minnesota – including three on Saturday alone – state officials have called for caution on state roads.

The motorcycle death toll for Minnesota rose from one to six in just seven days after a series of accidents, and WCCO reports the Department of Public Safety is urging drivers and riders to take precautions, as more bikes take to the roads along with the return of warm weather.

Of the five deaths in the past week, the TV station reports, four riders were not wearing helmets.

Among the victims over the weekend were Mankato pair 37-year-old Nicholas Bissette and 38-year-old Corinne Claridge-Bollman, who both died when their bike collided with a Cadillac that was crossing Highway 68 at Blue Earth County.

KIMT reports the other incidents over the past week include a 23-year-old dying after sideswiping a vehicle in Little Canada last Wednesday, and a 46-year-old man overturning into a ditch in Lac Qui Parle County on Thursday.

Also on Saturday, a 53-year-old man died after running into a culvert on County Road 7 in Goodhue County.

The DPS told KARE 11 it is urging drivers to watch out for motorcycles when entering roads or changing lanes, to check their blind spots, and to give them enough room.

Riders meanwhile are being advised to wear brightly-colored protective gear to increase their visibility, as well as wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet.
