5 people were killed in just one day on Minnesota roads

Five people died in traffic accidents near the Twin Cities on Tuesday, which the State Patrol says is unusual.

"Five traffic fatalities in less than 24 hours is highly unusual," Lt. Tiffani Nielson told BringMeTheNews Wednesday. "All of these five fatalities were different; there is not one single pattern to define these five deaths."

Motorcyclist killed marked 5th fatality

A motorcyclist killed in Anoka County was the fifth person to die in a wreck in the Twin Cities on Tuesday.

The accident happened at 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 65 and Osborne Road in Spring Lake Park, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Authorities say a motorcycle collided with another vehicle in the center of the intersection, and the adult male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released, and officials did not mention if the driver of the other vehicle was injured.

The crash is still under investigation.

State Patrol urges safety

The other fatal incidents Tuesday included two people being killed in a two-vehicle crash in St. Paul; a driver dying after rolling her vehicle on a bridge; and a pedestrian being hit by a truck while crossing the interstate.

This has the State Patrol reminding drivers how to prevent a crash.

"The top four things drivers can do to keep themselves safe are to drive attentively, wear seatbelts or helmets, never use alcohol and drive, and respect speed limits," Nielson told BringMeTheNews.

At least 125 people have been killed in crashes on Minnesota roads this year. Last year at this time, 127 people died in traffic-related incidents, according to the Toward Zero Deaths website.

Safety officials are encouraging motorists and passengers to buckle their seat belts – extra enforcement began on Monday and continues until June 5.
