5-year-old killed in Olmsted County ID'd; older brother jailed

The boy was found not breathing on Monday.

The young boy who died after being found not breathing in his southeastern Minnesota home has been identified.

According to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, 5-year-old Alex James Smith was found in the upstairs of a home located on the 300 block of 2nd St. SW in Eyota on Monday afternoon. He was pronounced dead after being transported to Mayo Clinic St. Marys.

The child's 17-year-old brother was arrested, with the sheriff's office reporting that the preliminary cause of death appears to be the result of asphyxiation.

There were four other children in the house at the time, but no adults present.

"The 17-year old suspect did provide a statement to investigators which solidified the probable cause to arrest," the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said in its original release.

The sheriff's office anticipated that the 17-year-old would be formally charged with 2nd-degree murder on Wednesday.

"We are again reiterating and supporting the family’s request for privacy during this extremely difficult time," the sheriff's office said.
