50K people gather at MOA for Sunday's Race for the Cure
About 50,000 people laced up their shoes on Sunday to participate in the 21st annual Susan G. Komen Twin Cities Race for the Cure at the Mall of America, KARE 11 reports.
The annual Mother Day's race raised $2.5 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and preliminary treatment programs, according to WCCO. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds stays in Minnesota to help uninsured and underinsured women fight breast cancer.
The remaining 25 percent helps fund breast cancer research programs.
Corrine Niklaus of Prior Lake and her mother, JoAnn Niklaus of Rosemount were among this year's participants, the Pioneer Press reports. It has been their Mother Day's tradition for the past 20 years, but this year they were walking a different reason.
"Last August, on my 50th birthday, I found a lump in my breast," Corrine told the newspaper. "I had no reason to think I'd be one of the 'one in eight' women who get breast cancer. I'm still undergoing treatment, but what I've learned from all the women in pink is that the journey is the surviving of it, of living a long and healthy life afterward."
More than 1.5 million were expected to participate in 2013′s race globally.
