5K Hero Run will honor Fargo Officer Jason Moszer

The annual Fargo Marathon will now refer to its 5K race as the "Hero Run" to honor fallen officer Jason Moszer as well as law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medical personnel and the military, reported the Grand Forks Herald.

Fargo Marathon Director Mark Knutson told the Herald that he hopes more than 10,000 runners will register for the 5K event, they will have the option to donate money toward the "hero fund." A committee that has yet to be formed will decide where that money will go – possibly a portion to Moszer's family.

The city of Fargo and its police department have already started a fund for the family, hoping to raise $100,000 for the slain officer's widow and two children.

Moszer was shot and killed in a standoff last month after a homeowner opened fire at officers responding to a domestic disturbance. He died of his injuries the following day.

Thousands of people paid their respects to Moszer at a 21-mile procession led by hundreds of squad cars from several states and Canada.

The Fargo Marathon has expanded since its first event 16 years ago, and now includes a marathon race, relay, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, and youth run, according to its website. This year's weekend-long event will go from May 19-21.
