Six residents from Wisconsin were killed and another two were injured Saturday when the SUV they were in was rear-ended and burst into flames on a Kentucky highway, The Associated Press reports.

The crash happened around 11:13 a.m. local time on northbound Interstate 65 south of Elizabethtown, The AP reports.

According to authorities, the victims were from an extended family from Marion, Wis., which is located in northeastern Wisconsin, about 40 miles west of Green Bay. The victims were riding in 1999 Ford Expedition when it was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer.

Authorities identified the victims as James Gollnow, 62; his wife, Barbara Gollnow, 62; Marion Champnise, 92, who was a friend; Sarina Gollnow, 18, whose relationship was unknown; and foster children Gabriel Zumig, 10, and Soledad Smith, 8.

The two survivors in the crash, Hope Hoth, 15, and Aidian Ejnik, 12, are also foster children. Hoth was transported to the hospital with burns and a broken spine, and Ejnik was hospitalized with cuts to the back of his head.

Authorities said minutes after the fatal crash, another crash happened in the opposite direction, injuring three, one critically.

According to The AP, police were investigating rubbernecking as a potential cause of the second accident.

Both crashes reportedly tied-up traffic for five hours.
