Minnesota's No. 1 student in map knowledge will be traveling to the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C., next month after winning top honors in the state, The Associated Press reports.

Alexander Conrad, who attends Valley View Middle School in Edina, beat out about 100 other competitors Friday at the 2013 Minnesota Geographic Bee.

Conrad will represent Minnesota in the finals May 20-22. The winner of the national competition will receive a $25,000 college scholarship along with an all-expense-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.

The National Geographic Bee is open to students between fourth and eighth grades.

In an interview with KARE 11, Conrad said he got his first atlas when he was age 2, and has added to his collection over the years. He's learned the capitol of every country and knows that there are 21,000 ponds and lakes in Minnesota.

Even though his special knowledge has it's drawbacks, Conrad doesn't seem to care.

"Most kids think it's dorky," Conrad said with a smile.

Finishing second in Friday's competition was Francis Winter from Willmar Middle School in Willmar, and third place went to Audrey Gorman of Our Lady of Grace in Edina.
