8 fun outdoor events for this warmer weekend

It's going to be pretty warm out this weekend, with highs in the 30s throughout pretty much the entire state. Seriously, check out Jerrid Sebesta's forecast.

With that in mind, here are eight awesome outdoor events you could do with your family and friends this weekend.

1) Hockey Day in Minnesota

State of Hockey. Games all day outdoors. Enough said. The only drawback – it's a paid event, so you'll need to budget for tickets if you want to go with a group.

2) Icebox Days

If you're up in northern Minnesota, the 35th annual Icebox Days (held in International Falls) will give you plenty of different things to do, most of them outdoors. (Listing them all here would get too long, so click here.) Fun fact – Icebox Days has never been canceled, and was only shortened once in 1982 because wind chills hit 72 below zero.

3) Bald eagle watch

This one is, admittedly, a bit easier if you live in the southern part of Minnesota, since it's about three hours south of Rochester. But if you're good with a short car trip, you'll have the chance to see some bald eagles, take part in the Dubuque Sports and Recreation Festival, and enjoy some fun activities. There's plenty for kids to do, too.

4) Eden Prairie Ice Castle

The stunning, popular ice castles return to Minnesota after an absence last year. This time they were shaped and formed in Eden Prairie. The event actually opened last weekend, but the weather Saturday and Sunday here should make it a bit more pleasant of an experience. Great photo opportunities, so have a camera at the ready.

5) Pond Hockey Championships

About 250 teams, 2,000 players and 20,000 spectators will be at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis this weekend for the 10th annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. It's old-school, backyard puck play, happening across a couple dozen rinks.

6) Boulder Lake Ski Race and Snowshoe Stomp

For the people who love winter sports, but want a different flavor than hockey, this race (18 miles outside of Duluth) is split into different age groups, and offers registration up to the race day. You can race on skis, or take part in the snowshoe event.

7) Eau Claire ski jump competition

Cross the river into Wisconsin, and you'll get a chance to see some high-flying slope enthusiasts at the 129th annual (yes, 129th) Silver Mine Invitational. It features two K90 ski jumps, and both are sanctioned by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.

8) Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival

Creative, colorful kites will take to the wintry skies at Minneapolis' Lake Harriet Saturday afternoon, as part of the 13th annual Winter Kite Festival. Admission is free. You can bring a kite of your own, or buy one there to give it a try.
