Arrests, charges in recent St. Paul shootings; Mpls. police meet with community

In the past week, five people have been fatally shot in Minneapolis. Three have been shot and killed in St. Paul.

The latest came Monday afternoon, when a man was shot and killed at Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue in Minneapolis. Minneapolis police say the victim and suspect likely knew each other.

The victim was identified by family as Adbi Haji Muhammed, KSTP reports.

Officers had been on their way to visit the scene of another homicide (the 3700 block of First Avenue South) when the call came in at 4:45 p.m., the department says.

Muhammed's death "shocked" the local Somali community, MPR News writes, and is the second one to do so in recent months after a similar incident over the summer.

"It's just getting way too common now," one employee at Karmel Mall told the news outlet.

Arrests, charges in St. Paul cases

In St. Paul, two arrests have been made in the city's most recent fatal shooting.

Sarah Anne Wierstad, 24, was found with a gunshot wound at Beaumont and Bedford Sunday night. Police identified her Tuesday.

The Pioneer Press reports she was the mother of a 5-year-old, and working double shifts to help support her child. She was on her way home from a 12-hour work day when she was killed.

According to the Star Tribune, a male and female suspect have been arrested in connection with her death – though neither have been charged.

Police are still investigating two other recent shootings, both in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood:

Synika George James, 37, was killed in an alley on the 900 block of Reaney Ave. Wednesday evening.

– 24-year-old Emmett L. Wilson-Shaw was killed in an apparent shooting a few blocks away Thursday, near a bridge. The two killings are not thought to be connected.

On Wednesday, Dametrius Ratheal Adrian Moore was charged with nine counts in connection with the killing of Wilson-Shaw, including aiding and abetting second-degree murder, drive-by discharge of a firearm, and second-degree assault, according to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.

Two others believed to be in the vehicle at the time are being investigated.

More community engagement

The Star Tribune says the recent violence has even longtime police officers concerned.

Departments in both cities have increased focus on the areas where the shootings occurred. In St. Paul, there are extra officers on the east side, where the victims have all been killed within a short distance of each other, the Star Tribune says.

In Minneapolis, that means more officers and community engagement in the 5th Precinct, where shootings Sunday and Monday happened.

10/20/15 Community Engagment After a Homicide in the 5th Precinct

When the police tape disappears, the police do not. That is the message the Minneapolis Police Department wants to send to its residents. The MPD is committed to aggressively pursuing suspects; it is also extremely committed to connecting with affected city residents. What happens the day after a homicide? You may hear police are promising to increase patrol in the area; recently you’ve been hearing the MPD also plans on increasing community engagement following a tragic death. Here is an example of what that looks like.

Officers held a community engagement meeting with residents at Karmel Mall, near where Muhammed was killed, police said in a news release. Police said nearly 100 people showed up.

Muhammed is the 40th person to be killed in the city this year, and the fifth person fatally shot in Minneapolis in the past week.

The others:

Jessica Denise St. Marie, 28, of Wadena, was fatally shot at a bus stop along East Lake Street last Tuesday. A 50-year-old male was arrested Saturday.

Elija Doentae Larkin, 19, of Minneapolis, was killed outside New Bethel Baptist Church in north Minneapolis Wednesday evening.

– 16-year-old Tyrone Rice Jr. was shot in the head while sitting in a parked car on Lyndale Avenue in North Minneapolis Thursday.

– An adult male was found lying in the alley with gunshot wounds at 3700 block of First Avenue South around 10 p.m. Sunday.

“This community needs peace. We need people to put the guns down. These (recent) cases aren’t necessarily related but the common denominator is gun violence,” Chief Janeé Harteau said, according to a city news release. Harteau also said addressing gun violence is a priority for she and Mayor Betsy Hodges.

FOX 9 said in a tweet two more people were shot overnight into Wednesday morning in Minneapolis.
