Investigators are working to find out what happened to a man who was found dead and burned in a central Minnesota field.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office received a report just after 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, with the caller saying they'd found a burned man's body in a field on the 10600 block of River Street in Brockway Township, which is about 20 miles north of St. Cloud.

Sheriff Don Gudmundson identified the body as 86-year-old Edwin Opatz, of Rice.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Opatz was burning grass pasture earlier in the day Monday.

His exact cause of death is being investigated and his remains have been sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
