A nine-year-old Minnesota boy was bitten by a shark while they vacationed in Miami Beach, Florida, on Sunday.
Kristine Weiskopf told Local 10 she and her son, Jay, were in the water for only a few minutes. Jay was body surfing and when she pulled him up, she noticed a chunk of skin was missing from his shoulder.
“He just said, ‘Ow,’ and I looked down and there was about a 4-foot gray shark just kinda swimming away, so I just scooped him up and ran him up the beach,” Weiskopf told the news station.
Jay was brought to the hospital to have surgery to close the large wound.
"I know taking a vacation is a risk, but I had no idea this was the risk we were taking, he's okay," Kristine Weiskopf wrote on Facebook on Sunday. "Traumatized but okay and we thank God for that."
Kristin and Ren Weiskopf told the news station they're concerned for their son, but also for others who are using the beach because it's still open, they told Local 10.
As for Jay, his prognosis is good since he's young, but doctors are worried about possible infection and his mobility, the station says.
