97 Minnesota airports receive federal bailout cash, here's how much they got

MSP Airport got the largest amount, unsurprisingly.

Almost 100 airports in Minnesota are getting a slice of the $50 billion in federal bailout money designed to support the nation's airline industry during the coronavirus crisis.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced the awards, part of the wider CARES Act, on Tuesday, with Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport getting the largest chunk of cash with $125 million.

The airport's operator, the Metropolitan Airports Commission, said on Monday that while the funding was welcome, it would only provide short-term relief and that the long-term funding picture remains uncertain.

The second largest award has gone to Brainerd Lakes Regional, getting just under $18 million, while Duluth International and Rochester International are getting $5.2 million and $2.5 million, respectively.

Also on Tuesday, Minnesota-based airline Sun Country applied for an exemption so it only has to operate 4 flights in order to qualify for federal bailout money, with the MSP routes to Phoenix, Orlando, Fort Myers, and Las Vegas the ones it wants to keep, per Thrifty Traveler.
