Update 8:45 a.m. – Highway 169 has been reopened southbound at Excelsior Boulevard, the State Patrol says.

What's happened?

Highway 169 is closed southbound on Friday morning following a pile-up involving at least 13 cars around 6 a.m.

It happened near Excelsior Boulevard in Hopkins.

Southbound drivers are being directed to exit at Excelsior or Hwy. 7.

The Star Tribune reports as many as 15-20 cars may have been involved in the crash.

What's the outcome?

The Minnesota State Patrol said at 6:42 a.m. that it will take at least two hours for the road to be cleared.

The closure couldn't have happened at a worse time, given it'll cause significant problems for the Friday morning commute.

KSTP reports at least one person was injured in the pile-up.

There's been no word yet on how it unfolded.

It's been an icy morning

Thursday's 2-plus inches of snowfall in the Twin Cities has been followed by a deep freeze, with temperatures between 10-15 below starting off Friday morning.

KSTP Traffic reports there have been spinouts and rollovers on other metro area roads Friday morning, including a ramp closure at the 694/94 interchange in Brooklyn Center that led to delays of a half hour.

And police departments have been warning of dangerous conditions on metro area streets.

It follows a bad Thursday for driving in Minnesota, with the snow that blanketed the state leading to hundreds of crashes and spinouts.

The State Patrol says there were 274 crashes across the state on Thursday – 30 with injury – as well as 141 vehicle spinouts and 10 jackknifed semis.
