A family in northwest Minnesota have appealed for help finding those responsible for killing two of their horses over the weekend, and critically injuring a third.

The Perham Focus reports the animals were shot late Friday night or early Saturday morning on a farm belonging to Todd and Heidi Carlson, who live a mile southeast of the regional airport in Thief River Falls.

The family discovered the dead horses about 60 feet from their house, with their 9-year-old palamino Lefty and foal Gypsy dying from gunshot wounds, while their 8-year-old named Cash was shot in the neck, the newspaper reports.

According to the Pennington County Sheriff's Facebook page, one of the horses was found by the Carlsons' 15-year-old daughter Maddie.

Heidi Carlson issued impassioned pleas for assistance through Facebook, saying: "Please help us find who did this so we have closure, and so this does not happen to another family."

Describing the sorrel-colored foal Gypsy, she added: "... still can't wrap my head around that she isn't here. She would be standing by the gate every morning on our way out to school and work and give us a little cackle."

Anyone with information about is asked to contact the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office at 218-681-6161.

Pennington County Sheriff Ray Kuznia told AgWeek there was a similar incident in Pennington County in October, in which a horse was killed near the Black River Lutheran Church. It is not known whether there is a link between the two incidents.

Police in southern Minnesota are investigating a separate incident in which a dog was injured after being shot with an air rifle.

WCCO reports the incident occurred Tuesday in Clarks Grove, with the dog now recovering from a small gunshot wound at home. Anyone with information should contact the Freeborn County Sheriff's office.
